1. The short version
- Your books stay on your device. The books you add, where you are in them, your settings, and the audio the App makes are stored on your device and are never sent to us.
- Speech is generated on your device. The voice model ships inside the App. The text of your books is never sent to a speech service, ours or anyone else’s.
- The App has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. We do not collect personal information through the App, and we do not sell data or use it to train machine-learning models.
- The only thing the App fetches from the internet is Project Gutenberg’s catalog of free books, when you browse it or add a book from it.
2. Data the App stores on your device
To work, the App keeps the following on your device:
- the books you add, converted from their EPUB files, with their cover images;
- your place in each book and the voice you chose for it;
- any pronunciation corrections you make;
- your reading and listening settings;
- the audio the App generates as it reads a book aloud; and
- a diagnostic log of what the App did, which stays on the device.
Deleting a book in the App removes that book and everything made for it. Deleting the App removes all of it. Your books, positions and settings may be included in your device’s backups (for example iCloud Backup) according to your own backup settings; the generated audio is excluded from backups.
3. Files you add
The App reads only the files you choose: an EPUB you pick in Files, or one you share to the App from another app. It makes its own copy of that book and does not access your other files.
4. Project Gutenberg
The App lets you browse, search and download free books from Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org). When you open the catalog, see the “Start with a classic” shelf, search, or add a book from it, the App requests catalog pages, cover images and book files directly from Project Gutenberg. Those requests go from your device to Project Gutenberg, not through us, and include what any web request includes, such as your IP address, along with any search words you type. Project Gutenberg handles them under its own privacy policy.
Books you import from Files do not use the network at all.
5. Information Apple may share with us
The App is distributed through Apple’s App Store and TestFlight. Apple may make certain information available to us under its own terms. For example, if you test the App through TestFlight: your name and email address if you were invited by email, feedback and screenshots you choose to send, and crash reports. If you use the App Store version: crash reports and usage data you have agreed to share with app developers in your device settings. We use this information only to support you and to fix and improve the App.
6. Sharing
We do not sell or share information for advertising. Because the App does not send your data to us, there is nothing from the App for us to share. We may share the limited information described in section 5 only where required by law or to protect rights and safety.
7. Children
The App does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
8. Your choices
You control everything the App stores: delete a book to remove it and its audio, or delete the App to remove everything. To ask about information Apple has shared with us (section 5), or to ask that we delete it, email us at the address below.
9. Changes
We may update this notice from time to time. We’ll revise the “Last updated” date above when we do, and reflect material changes in the App’s listing where appropriate.
