1. The short version
- Your library is yours. Books, audiobooks, reading positions, settings, and generated audio are stored on your device and are never sent to us. When iCloud Drive is available, library content also synchronizes through your own iCloud account.
- Speech is generated on your device. The voice model ships inside the App. The text of your books is never sent to a speech service, ours or anyone else’s.
- The App has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. We do not collect personal information through the App, and we do not sell data or use it to train machine-learning models.
- The App contacts book catalogs and library servers when you browse or download from them. It also uses Apple’s services for purchases, optional iCloud synchronization, and speech-recognition assets.
2. Data the App stores on your device
To work, the App keeps the following on your device:
- the books and audiobooks you add, with their text and cover images;
- your place in each book and the voice you chose for it;
- any pronunciation corrections, highlights, and bookmarks you make;
- your reading and listening settings;
- the audio the App generates as it reads a book aloud; and
- a diagnostic log of what the App did, which stays on the device.
Deleting a book in the App removes that book and everything made for it. Deleting the App removes its local data; copies in iCloud or on other devices may remain. Your books, positions and settings may be included in your device’s backups (for example iCloud Backup) according to your own backup settings; the generated audio is excluded from backups.
3. Files you add
The App reads the book and audiobook files you choose in Files or share from another app. It makes its own copy and does not access your other files. Audiobook alignment uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition; your audio is not sent to us or to a remote transcription service.
4. Catalogs, library servers, and Apple services
Unison Reader can browse and download from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, and library servers you add, including OPDS and Audiobookshelf servers. Requests for catalogs, searches, covers, and downloads go directly to the selected service and include ordinary connection information such as your IP address and the search terms you enter. Each service handles these requests under its own privacy policy.
If a server requires sign-in, the credentials you provide are sent to that server. Server addresses are stored on your device and passwords in the system keychain; they are not sent to Magrathea or synchronized with your library.
When iCloud Drive is available, Unison Reader synchronizes library content through your own private iCloud container. Magrathea does not have access to that container. Manage iCloud through your Apple account settings. iCloud copies and copies on other devices may remain after you uninstall the App.
Apple processes listening purchases and restores through the App Store. Unison Reader checks the purchase entitlement using StoreKit; we do not receive payment-card details through the App. Apple's on-device speech recognition may need to download system language assets.
The system's Look Up panel may offer online searches or information when you choose them. Those services follow their providers' privacy practices.
5. Information Apple may share with us
The App is distributed through Apple’s App Store and TestFlight. Apple may make certain information available to us under its own terms. For example, if you test the App through TestFlight: your name and email address if you were invited by email, feedback and screenshots you choose to send, and crash reports. If you use the App Store version: crash reports and usage data you have agreed to share with app developers in your device settings. We use this information only to support you and to fix and improve the App.
6. Sharing
We do not sell or share information for advertising. Because the App does not send your data to us, there is nothing from the App for us to share. We may share the limited information described in section 5 only where required by law or to protect rights and safety.
7. Children
The App does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
8. Your choices
You can delete a book and its associated audio within Unison Reader, remove library-server connections, and manage iCloud Drive through your Apple account settings. Uninstalling the App removes local data but may leave iCloud copies or copies on other devices. To ask about information Apple has shared with us (section 5), or to ask that we delete it, email us at the address below.
9. Changes
We may update this notice from time to time. We’ll revise the “Last updated” date above when we do, and reflect material changes in the App’s listing where appropriate.
If you contact support, we receive your email address and the information or diagnostic logs you choose to send. Our general Privacy Policy covers that correspondence.
